Are Underbust Corsets Back in Style?

If you haven’t noticed, there has been a surprising amount of celebrities photographed in underbust corsets lately, and that’s not just when they’re performing or modeling. Gigi Hadid, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and more have been seen out and about rocking the underbust corset.

So does that mean the underbust corset is back on the pages of fashion? We’re pretty confident in saying yes.

While high fashion had underbust corsets walking down the runway in 2014 and 2015, the underbust corset has now filtered down to the average public in multiple different ways. Front-lacing dresses and tops give the aesthetic appearance of the underbust corset without requiring you to buy two different pieces of clothing.  Celebrities are cinching these easy-to-wear corsets over everything from plaid shirts to formal dresses (and looking quite stunning doing it).

So what makes an underbust corset more attractive than an overbust corset? It’s all about approachability. The underbust corset can be worn with your own bra and can also be easily worn on top of your own clothing, while an overbust corset has to be fitted to your cup size and does not wear well over other clothing. The underbust corset can add the drama of a small waist without all the minutiae of an overbust corset. They can also be much easier to get in (and out) of since you can usually lace them by yourself by mostly tightening the laces in front before spinning it around.

If you want to try your hand at wearing an underbust corset, we recommend a simple, black piece with a hook-and-eye closure at the back. This accessible fashion accessory allows you to embrace corseting with a little less “look at me” flare while still striking a fashion-forward look.
